The last two weeks went by so quickly! Puppies continue to do really well.

During the day they stay in a much larger pen where they have several dog houses, dog beds and a lot of toys. The pen is attached to a shed, where pups can go to when the weather is bad. During thunderstorms we bring them to the house, and they spend their nights downstairs in their whelping box and pen filled with wood chips.

Today we had a lot of rain and were surprised to see that when puppies were let out on the lawn this evening they reworked the liver drag from 24 hours ago. We thought they would not be able to smell it. The flags were still in the ground so we could see they they followed the line, made a check and got to the end of the line. All this was in a good working style. Oh, how we underestimate our dogs' noses!

Tommy and Tuesday's puppies continue to develop well. They have had a very busy week. In the house they continue to sleep in their whelping box, which now is their bed. They go to bathroom in the large pen filled with wood chips. This setup males for easy cleaning. Tuesday decided that their teeth are too sharp now and stopped jumping into their pen. She loves her puppies and she craves a close contact with them. She always wants to know where they are. But for now we are keeping them pretty much separated so she stops producing milk.

During the day, when the weather allows, pups stay in a large pen outdoors. They have a variety of beds, a crate and a lot of toys there. We try to change them all the time so they do not get bored. Of course, they have each other and now they play hard.
We filled this shallow plastic and let the pups wet their feet in the water. Only Vonnie figured out quickly that if she grabs the string, she actually does not have to go all the way to get the ball. This is a the most adventurous and enterprising puppy.
Pups started to go for walks, and the picture below shows John who is trying to be very careful and not to step on any of them. They do have a real talent to get under our feet.
We also started to take pups for short rides. This picture was taken during their first short trip, and the pups were not impressed. Today (May 30) they were much better and more relaxed.

We also let pups regular contact with our adult dogs. This picture shows Tommy, who met them for the first time almost a week ago. He was very good with them. Even though he is a high energy dog, he adjusted his behavior and was very gentle with the pups.
During our meals pups are with us in the kitchen, and this picture shows them snoozing after their mid-morning snack of apples. Their diet is very diversified and includes raw mix of meat and veggies, goat milk, canned food and dry kibble.
They are agile and fast, and the next three weeks will be a lot of fun for us while we will continue working with them.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072187259704459983.post-73700232760191220022014-05-22T20:21:00.001-04:002014-06-03T20:47:23.847-04:00Puppies are weaned almost completely

Unfortunately it has been a while since my last post on puppies. I left for the United Blood Trackers Trackfest in North Carolina a week ago and got back home on Tuesday.

So let's go back to the time when puppies turned 4 weeks old. In wirehaired dachshunds there is a correlation between the timing of teeth emergence and texture of coat. Usually the pups who get their teeth first will have a shorter coat. The once who get their teeth as last ones will have softer and fuller coats. The pictures below show teeth of three pups. Vivica and Vonnie will have shorter, harsher coats than Volt. Viola and Vincent will have rather soft and full coats.

Pups spend part of their day outside in a pen, where we put a crate and plenty of toys to keep them occupied. They started to use the crate right away, and it is a good start to crate training. A crate is the best tool for housebreaking puppies, but this task will be left to the pups' new owners.
In the fifth week puppies were making a gradual transition to solid food, but occasionally Tuesday would let them nurse. Now this is not a pleasant experience for her as pups' teeth are sharp like needles.
During the night and when the weather is rainy puppies stay in the house in this pen. The whelping bed serves as their bed now, which they avoid to soil. There is a large pen attached to the whelping box, which is filled with wood chips. Puppies figured out pretty quickly that this is their bathroom now. This is a great start to their housebreaking as instinctively they choose to go to bathroom as far from their bed as possible.
Puppies started to meet new people now and when I was away they had a nice play session with our friends Dan and Faith. Yesterday we had visitors from Florida, Joanna and Lorin. Joanna, who is a vet, fell in love with our dachshunds (she knew them from our website) and really wanted to see them. It was very good for the pups to be handled by strangers, and after half an hour of playing they just fell asleep in the people's laps. Vonnie and Vivica lost their collars so it is not obvious from the pics who is who but we know.
It is always a great relief for a breeder to see both testicles down in male puppies. This is the case with Volt and Vincent BTW, Vonnie started to get out of the pen, but we have not figured out how she does it. She is a smart cookie.
The fourth week between 21st and 28th day in puppy development is referred to as "awareness or identification period". At this stage all puppies' senses are functioning well, and this past week pups have undergone many first experiences. For example they heard a vacuum cleaner for the first time (no problem!). Since the whelping box is still in my den where I work on the computer, they listened to quite a few youtube sound tracks with a variety of sounds. So far I have not noticed any sound sensitivity. Sure when they hear a door slammed or a sudden loud noise they startle (which is a completely normal response), but they recover from it very quickly. Several times a day they are taken out of the whelping box and allowed free run and exploration of my den. They like that a lot. When weather allows, they get to spend some time outside in a pen, where they are exposed to a huge variety of smells, sights and sounds.

Pups still rely on Tuesday for their nourishment but yesterday for the first time they had a meal of puppy food mixed with goat milk. They were also given raw bones to play with.

Their weights are:

Puppies are 3.5-weeks-old, and as expected today there were many "firsts". For the first time I heard them "talking" to me and to one another. For the first time they got out of the whelping box, and then I took them outside to a pen where they spent 30 minutes on the grass. Their nails got dremeled, for the 2nd time. They start to resemble "little doggies".

All is well with V-puppies. Tuesday continues to be a very attentive mother though now she takes long breaks from the whelping box. She continues to eat well and has plenty of milk, which results in chunky puppies. Now pups are starting to interact with one another, and of course with Tuesday. They wag their tails and attempt to play with toys. With every day they are getting to be more active. It is still too cold to take them outside.

Tomorrow puppies are going to be two weeks old so today I tried to snap some pictures. As expected all the puppies are going to have wirehaired coats with beards. Tommy is homozygous for the dominant gene controlling the presence of furnishings so even though Tuesday carries a recessive gene for the lack of furnishings these pups, all of them, are going to have beards.

At this stage the pups seem to be very laid back and low key but this might change with age. Tuesday continues to be a devoted mom, and now she takes some short breaks from the whelping box.

All the puppies are now gone to their new homes, but we need to catch up here on the puppy journal with what had happened here during the last ten days. When Cheri Faust came here to breed Danika to Sky we managed to set some time aside to take pictures of puppies on a grooming table and evaluate their conformation. At the time two pups had already left for new homes so we could do stacking with only five pups.

Cheri is a very experienced with showing dachshunds and she taught the pups stack on the table within ten minutes. This is a video of demonstrating how she does it.

There were quite a few differences visible among the pups when it comes to body type, proportions, size, coat etc.
Four weeks ago when Cheri Faust was visiting us, we saw a deep connection and quick attraction between her and Uta, the smallest puppy in the litter. So I offered Cheri a co-ownership of Uta with me keeping breeding rights, and she liked the idea. Last weekend Cheri was back breeding Danika to Sky, and we had a chance to see Uta again. She was still the smallest and probably the feistiest puppy, with a lot of potential. Good luck Cheri with the puppy!
Good luck to Matt, his fiance Emile and their new puppy Uma, now "Heidi"! Matt and Emile live in Ithaca, NY, just 3 hours from us. Matt is a licensed tracker and a member of Deer Search of Finger Lakes. Emile is going to take a NYS DEC exam in August. Both are hunters. Matt is involved in two deer management programs in suburban areas. Could we have dreamed of a better home for our puppy? Being able to place our puppies with people who are dedicated to the cause of wounded deer recovery makes all the work worthwhile.

The remaining four puppies will stay with us for the next two weeks. It should be a lot of fun! Last evening they tracked a two-hour-old blood line on a light tracking leash. Two puppies scored 10 on a scale of 0-10 (10 is the highest) and the other two got 9. We couldn't be happier with the pups. Today we started to walk them on a leash and they did well.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072187259704459983.post-86568624833479672252013-07-19T21:53:00.001-04:002013-07-19T21:53:40.216-04:0010th week in the life of puppiesDuring the tenth week of pups' life we have continued to work with puppies on tracking. Now we need to age the tracks more and make them longer. Puppies continue to go on walks around our property, in the woods and fields. They become more independent and their range gets larger with every day. Also almost every day they spend a couple of hours in crates getting a nap. Mielikki has access to pups a couple of times a day, but the weaning process has been completed and she does not produce any more milk.

When we have our own meals we bring one puppy to our kitchen so we can spend some time with pups one-on-one basis. We are learning about pups' tendencies and their personalities. So far we are very impressed with all the pups, and it is going to be very hard to part with them. At the end of this week a couple of pups will leave for their new home.
They stayed with us from Thursday to Monday, and puppies benefited from the visit enormously. Larry and Cheri believe, just like we do, in early conditioning and training, so every day puppies tracked, swam, played and socialized. It was a lot of fun!
This is a short video shot yesterday during puppies' first walk in the woods. They did very well. Their motivation to follow Mielikki was very high as they wanted to get a drink of her milk. On purpose we took them through some difficult terrain so they had to do some physical and mental work. As you see, we don't baby our puppies. We expect them to be resourceful and resilient. Even Uta, who is still the smallest puppy in the litter, showed how tough and smart she is.

Puppies have been exploring a lot. They are showing interest in holes created by other dogs and they do some digging on their own.
The dachshund breed was first developed to hunt foxes and badgers in their dens under ground. This meant that they had to be psychologically comfortable in tight, dark places. The video suggests that our little tracking dogs still think that it's fun to run though a dark tunnel.
The picture shows Ursula at the end of the track. We use large pieces of liver that cannot be swallowed. Liver contains a lot of vitamin A, which in excess is toxic, so while we use deer liver for training purposes we actually do not let pups ingest too much of it.
The pic below shows puppies with our Bernie. He is a 7.5 year-old neutered male, who helped raise a lot of litters. Bernie is perfect for this job and it is his role in the family. He is not as permissive as Mielikki (she lets pups get away with murder), but is also very stable and reliable.

Puppies turned six weeks old on Friday. Their curiosity is expanding and they seek new experiences. Therefore, when on Sunday afternoon the temperature hit 93F, we decided to take puppies to the pond. We have never exposed pups to the water at such an early age. But Mielikki loves to swim and we thought she would have a good influence during their first outing to the pond. So we loaded pups into two crates and drove to the edge of the pond. It is not too far from our house, but it was too hot for them to walk such a distance.

You can see from the video what happened next. Some pups were more ready for this new challenge than others; Uncas was a star of this show and swam like an otter. Mielikki was great; she swam a lot but also kept a close eye on her pups. What a great mother she has been.

After all the pups got wet, we let them run back to the house.

One might ask why we go into such a length and trouble to give our pups experiences like this one. We firmly believe that in the long run it is very beneficial for the pups to be challenged and offered enriched environment during this developmental stage. They will have better coping and social skills when they have to deal with mild stress. Puppies' rate of mental
development depends on the complexity of their environment. We don't push our puppies too far, that's for sure, but it is really important to stimulate their brains and bodies at this stage.
On Saturday Mielikki and Sky visited pups in their pen attached to the shed. Pups still occasionally nurse and Mielikki is fine with this. So they mobbed her and pulled her down. Sky was just an observer!

Other things we are teaching pups include being accustomed to a crate. They have been familiar with crates for a long time, but now we bring them to the house and put a couple of pups to a crate. We let them stay there for a couple of hours. They protest for the first few minutes, but after that they just go to sleep.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072187259704459983.post-89882557235926425432013-06-22T10:50:00.002-04:002013-06-22T10:50:28.121-04:00A sigh of relief: checking pups' teeth

Now that pups are 6 weeks old, it was a huge relief to see that they do not miss any teeth and their bites are correct. Also both male puppies have their testicles down. We could not be happier with the breeding!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072187259704459983.post-4944431795993557102013-06-20T21:41:00.000-04:002013-06-20T21:41:41.435-04:00Puppies' first taste of deer liver

Watching them is good for my soul. In this world filled with tragedy and sad news, this is the best therapy you can have!

Yesterday puppies went for their first car drive. Also they spent their first night outside in our shed. They basically outgrew my den, and this time we have avoided setting up a pen filled with wood chips. Now, almost at six weeks they are ready for a more advanced set up, which was described here. One of the dog houses in the shed is heated and we turned the heat on as last night temperature dipped to low 40s. Around midnight Mielikki insisted that she needed to be with them so we let her do it. As it turned out she chewed off one of the puppy collars so I don't think we will let her spend another night with them. She continues to be just an extraordinary mom and still insists on cleaning them. Their diet now is part solid food and part Mielikki.
This is when they experience many situations and things for the first time. Actually they crave new experiences and we are happy to oblige.

Puppies now have "regular" collars and these are their colors:
Urho blue
Uncas red
Ursula dark green
Uta lime
Uma beige
Uschi pink
Utah orange

Apparently we have gotten ten inches of rain in the last couple of weeks. Well, it was raining today again. As you can see in the video puppies had a lot of fun in our kitchen/dining area. The background music was entertaining and included some rain forest birds.

We started to supplement pups with some extra food, but Mielikki still insists on cleaning them. I have never seen such a clean freak canine mom! Also, she loves to play with her pups, and she started to let them know that some toys such as her ball are off-limits. But she does it gently and never growls or snaps at the pups.

Fourteen-year-old Asko came to visit his great-great-great-great grandchildren. The lineage goes like this: Asko-->Elli-->Billy-->Keena-->Paika-->Sky-->U-puppies. Mielikki could care less. The only thing she was concerned was her ball as this was what Asko was looking for! Puppies tried to get some milk out of Asko but failed miserably.
